Area Churches Pitch In
On Work Days

South City Church worked in May. Seven volunteers showed up ready and willing to work. Shrubs were pruned, winter foliage was removed from the ornamental grasses, and general sprucing-up of the landscaping was completed to the properties on Etzel.

Old Orchard Church sent 17 members to work on June 9. They worked on mulching and edging the playground, building a wooden fence around a dumpster, pruning shrubs, weeding the landscaping and taming an overgrown area around a fence where weeds had begun to take over. Everyone enjoyed a lovely sandwich lunch in one of the newly renovated, vacant apartments.

Thanks to both congregations for their hard work and commitment to Cornerstone’s mission. You are truly appreciated.

More workdays will probably be scheduled for the fall, so if your organization or family would like to sponsor a work day, please contact the Cornerstone office at 314.726.2273.

The Service of Volunteers

One way Cornerstone is able to maintain rents far below market rate is through the generosity of so many who volunteer their time painting, cleaning, clearing brush, knocking down walls, hanging drywall, and more. In the last year, youth groups, small groups and individuals gave over 2,700 hours of labor to Cornerstone Corporation. If you’d like to help, or bring a youth group, contact us! We’d love to have you!

Cornerstone Purchases
Another Building

Cornerstone Corporation is excited to announce the purchase of another property, our first purchase in about eight years. On Easter Monday 2007, Cornerstone purchased this nearly 100 year old, solid brick four-family building on Etzel Street across from Gordon Carlson’s house. It has been a vacant, blighted building on the street for the last year. We have prayerfully considered adding more properties to our portfolio and are thrilled to move forward, in faith. The estimated cost of the whole project, including purchase, is $160,000. We hope to be an encouragement to the residents of the street. We are also looking for donors to help offset our costs. The purchase of this building brings Cornerstone’s total number of apartments to 36 and total buildings owned and managed to 9 (7 on Etzel Avenue and 2 in Skinker-Debaliviere.)
